How to choose the right soap box

The best soap box depends on your bar, your price point and where you sell. Use this guide as a starting point:

• Handmade and natural bars sold at markets or online: kraft soap boxes or soap sleeves. They look natural, cost less and let the bar breathe.
• Colorful, swirled or layered bars: soap boxes with window, so the design of the bar does the selling.
• Retail shelves and big box stores: a closed tuck end box in white cardstock with full color printing. It protects the bar, stacks neatly and carries a barcode.
• Gift sets and holiday collections: soap gift boxes with a custom insert and foil logo.
• Pump bottles and hand wash: liquid soap boxes sized to the bottle, with an insert to stop movement.
• Round, oval or unusual bars: die cut soap boxes such as pillow or hexagon boxes.

What to print on your soap box

Your box is also your label, so plan the panels before you design. Most soap brands include:

1. Front panel: brand name, product name and scent, plus a short line about what makes the bar special.
2. Net weight: in ounces and grams, for example “Net Wt. 4 oz (113 g)”.
3. Ingredient list: in descending order of amount.
4. Business name and location: the name and city of the maker or distributor.
5. Directions and warnings: for example “For external use only”.
6. Barcode: if you plan to sell in retail stores.

In the USA, labeling rules depend on how your soap is made and what you claim. A true soap that only claims to clean follows different rules from a product that claims to moisturize or deodorize, which the FDA treats as a cosmetic. Check the FDA guidance on soap or ask a regulatory adviser before you finalize your text. We will make sure everything fits clearly on your dieline.

Design tips for soap packaging that sells

• Keep the front simple: one logo, one product name, one scent. Shoppers decide in seconds.
• Use color to code scents: lavender in purple, citrus in orange, charcoal in black. It makes a range easy to shop.
• Show the ingredients you are proud of: oats, honey, shea butter or essential oils deserve a spot on the front.
• Leave room for a story: a short paragraph on the side panel about who makes the soap builds trust.
• Order a sample first: colors on screen look different from colors on board, especially on kraft.
